It all started with a broken choke thermostat...

While removing that unit, I broke one of the 2 mounting bolts. Then I pulled the manifolds, breaking 2 more and having to cut off a 3rd bolt, to have the original hole drilled out and tapped.

So I got the choke bolt hole heli-coiled and the manifolds completely restudded, re-conjoined, and remounted. After everything was buttoned up, my '69 wouldn't run.

With starter fluid, she would crank, rev up very high, then cut off, all within a few seconds. I found a carb/intake troubleshooting list on-line that described the exact sympton and attributed the problem to a "big" vacuum leak.

She ran before. The only change is removed and remounted carb and manifolds.

Might the manifolds not be mounted flush against the head even though everything is tightened up snug?

I have just removed the manifolds again and want to clean the head and manifold sides of the intake ports. How should that be done?

When bolting the intake and the exhaust together, don't torque them tight until they are torqued to the head. Even then, warpage may still be too great to seal,

Also, don't forget to reconnect any vacuum lines that were connected to the manifold...don't ask how I know this one...lol

Hahaha, Mike! Unlike me, I actually remembered to do that.

Scott, the vacuum symptom is now gone and I think I have a fuel pump issue. Thanks so much for the tip!
