I have a 55 235 engine in a 58 apache and the vacuum advance does not work any more . Instead of replacing the original vacuum advance is it possible to replace the entire distributor with one for a 1966 230 engine with a more modern vacuum advance?

It can be done with machine work and money but why? Just replace your vacuum can.The distributor for engines later than 1962 will not easily fit earlier.

Yes, it is possible to swap for a later model dist. The hold down seat need to be machined.

Assuming you're running a 12 volt electrical system, just swap to the HEI ignition used on the late-70's and newer engines. It's a fairly simple swap that only involves a little machine work. That eleminates the points altogether, and gives you a much hotter spark.

Why not just buy a new vacuum advance for $25 and be done?
