Zero pressure cooling system will discharge up to 2+ qts. of antifreeze when temp gauge in dash rises only slightly, but stays in the 180 degree range.

Here is the background on my restoration:
*216 engine professionally rebuilt, *new radiator, *new 180 deg. thermostat, *new water pump, hoses & belt, * new exhaust system, * new manifold damper spring (damper moves easily and spring tilts damper properly when engine is hot, * new Rotor, distributor cap, condenser, wires & plugs(.035 gap), Timing is on the money & dwell is at 35 degrees such that engine runs smoothly with no exhaust pop's or ignition misses. No vacuum leaks at carb or manifold such that Vacuum guage reads a steady 19 inches.

I have even drained & refilled the antifreeze to ensure no air pockets at lower driver side petcock (next to bell housing), left out temp sensor in the head until antifreeze came out and even drilled a 3/16 hole in the new 180 degree thermostat to ensure no trapped air.

The typical "overheat" symptoms in the manual(e.g. valves, fuel mixture, dragging brakes, bad water pump, loose belt) have all been eliminated.

I put enough antifreeze in the radiator to just cover the core ports and after driving 20 to 30 miles the radiator overflow has discharged two quarts of water to cause the engine temp to creep up to the "8" of the 180 reading but yet it stays in the 180 range and "does not" indicate overheating.

I am running out of ideas as to what to do next ............ do you have any suggestions.

Thanks,
Chuck

When all this happens, is the top hose hot or cold?

When you check the level when cold again, is it still covering the core? The radiator will never stay completely full. The level will be an inch or two from the top.
