They're definitely not used for resizing cylinders, just setting up a crosshatch pattern for ring seating. Be absolutely sure to do a hot water and detergent scrubdown with a stiff-bristle brush, followed by a HOT water rinse. The small scratches can trap enough hone grit to wear out a set of rings in just a few miles. I learned that the hard way with a fresh re-ring job on a trip from California to Tennessee. By the end of a 2500-mile run, the engine was using 3 quarts of oil to a tank of gas, and the rings were worn to less than half their original thickness!
