While working on restoring my 52's speedometer, I found a small black plastic disc in the high beam indicator hole that looks like it got a little too close to the bulb. Is this piece necessary?
Also, I've noticed that my new gauge decals Don't have a punched hole for the indicator light! Guess I'll have to call the parts place.

My 52 Panel also had a "toasted" piece of plastic to. From the looks of mine it was red. I had another used one that was OK.

Sometime ago someone here posted the ideal thing but I simply can't remember. It seems that it was a piece of "plastic" from a sheet of it that you can get from and arts and crafts show.

....my decals did have the hole and it was one of the "points" I used to line the decal up. Are you sure the decal doesn't have a "score" mark on it so you can take it out.....maybe they left it in there in case folks didn't want it.....

Thanks for the thread link DADS50. I found a red plastic lid from a small plastic container I had sitting in my shed. I used metal snips to cut out a circle to make it a great replacement for the indicator. Best part, it was free.
I called the parts supplier and he grabbed some of the same decals off of the shelf there at the warehouse and discovered they were all missing the indicator hole. Once he talks to the manufacturer Monday, he'll call me back. Hopefully I'll get a new replacement.

Stay on them. They sometimes 'forget'.

I would test the plastic you are using to ensure the lamp (bulb) does not melt it. I used colored glass to ensure it does not melt or get brittle from the heat and break in the future. My gauge face decal did not have the high beam hole, so I just installed the decal and then used an awl to punch the hole. While the awl was in the hole, I continuously rotated the awl until it cut through the decal and left a nice clean perfectly aligned hole.

I called the parts company to follow up on the bad batch of gauge decals and they had received decals from another supplier and they had the same problem, no high beam hole cut out. So he refunded me for the cost of the decals letting me keep the one they sent me. I'm gonna try to punch the hole myself with an awl and see what happens. Free decals!

You're better off punching the hole yourself ... mine didn't line up fer squat.

For the red disc, I picked up a transparent gelatin filter used over theater/stage lighting. A 6x6" square is only a buck or two at any hobby, music/instrument or DJ store. The benefit is that it's heat resistant. ...and by heat resistant I mean a stage can will scar you if you bump it so a tiny little indicator bulb will never come close to discoloring the gel.
