My truck is painted with Sherwin Williams Ultra 7000 base coat.

I would like to knock down the shine and dull the finish.

I attempted matte clear coat on a test area but I'm not a painter and when I sprayed the clear it frosted and balled on the test area.

I realize the truck will eventually have to be repainted and base coat will not hold up.

Until I can repaint it is there a way to dull the finish?

I co-worker suggested hitting it with a scotch pad?

any suggestions?

Just park it in that Nevada sun for a week or so and that should help. Can you get that paint in a semi gloss or a flat paint?

a 3M pad might work, or maybe buff it out with fine rubbing compound? skip the polishing step after

The sun will take a toll on it

It's just really shiny and when we take pics the sun washes out the color. Just wondering if there was something I could do to dull it out a bit.

I'm trying to find a way to make my 20+ year-old paint SHINIER without rubbing through to the Transport Blue that is on some parts. I already have some blue-green ghosts.

Your truck and your story are too cool. Good luck with your task.

Just take your pictures on cloudy or overcast days, it'a a lot easier than changing the paint.

And yes scotch or brillo scouring pads will take some of the shine off.

Red58, I have not put any compound on the truck. I'll try in a small test area . I was not sure about trying that because there is no clear coat.We are limited on cloudy days in the desert.

What pad is recommended?
Would the red Pad be to aggressive?

Is wet sanding an option?

Base coat will fade to a totally flat surface with no shine at all in a matter of a few weeks unless you protect it with clear. Add flattening compound to the clearcoat if necessary, but basecoat should NEVER be exposed to the elements before the clear is applied. Let the basecoat dry overnight and wet sand with 600 or 1,000 grit before applying the clear if it's been more than 30 minutes between the base and the clear application.

Gus, is the dark blue your dad had the original color?

what about using 4.o steel wool to knock down the shine? it might take a while but i used it on some of my smaller interior parts that were just a little too shiny and it worked really well.

Its not an original chevy color

When my Dad bought the truck in the early 70"s it was Red, He had it painted dark blue around 73.

I plan to go to dark blue later, going for the 1970's utility look

Go to a body shop and ask some questions,see what they say.

I think I would just drive it until your ready to paint it again.

If it's just the photo problem, put a polarizing filter for the camera if available. It will make it look it's best. The filter is two lenses together, rotate the outer lens until the shine is negated.

If it's visually you want the paint duller, then I don't think you can afford polarizing lenses for everyone.....

Super55, it's not just a photo thing. To my eye the finish is distracting. It's not a shine as in a glossy clear.

Its more of a wash out, kind of hard to describe. I thought by now it would of dulled out some.

I do like the duller finish.

That looks like what is called "satin" finish. I'm not really understanding why you're wanting to dull it down as it looks mighty dull as it is. Good luck though!

I did a small test on the bed with he red 3m pad. I'll post a pic soon

Personally I don't understand why people want these trucks to have a primer look? GM never ever sent them out of the factory with primer on them. The thing about the dull primer look is it has an affinity for grease marks and since it is a porus finish I'm sure lots of other things soak into it nicely too. Bird poo too. The whole reason for a shine and waxing is to close and fill the pores in the paint, to prevent water soak through and the resultant rust. Just leave a car cover on for some time in a wet climate and you get blisters, I have seen lots of blistered paint because of it.

I was not asking for opionions on paint finish.

Since I've been a member the Stovebolt site has been helpful and answered a variety of questions related to our trucks.

Seems recently there is a need to interject what others should do with thier own trucks depending on some type of standard.

What you want to do with your truck is your business.

I like them all, stock, rough, lowrider, concourse. If a member comes on this site and ask a question that I might be able to help ill try my best to help out. If I get it wrong others will be along to help.

There are other sites with a more narrow focus.


I still believe the Stovebolt site is an all inclusive Pre 73 Chevrolet/Gmc truck forum., and the best forum out there.

mainly one has that need DADS, don't let it faze ya that some don't understand a clear coats function your truck is A1 and what the hobby [and this site] is about, the museums have enough old trucks to satisfy posterity

I too like all these trucks and ways to finish them. It's all what one wants to do. I am however, interested in how things are done and try to learn different techniques.

Dads50,I love the matte finish on your truck.There is no law that Iknow of that says paint has to be shiney.
I am finding the intolerance by some members here,unsettling
