The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Hardware Correctness: Hex vs Round Head & Material

In the process of building a list of hardware I need/ require. Unfortunately I DID NOT take this truck apart as most of you know, so I am reassembling on blind faith. also i did get a box of misc hardware, which i have sorted out and put in bins according to size and type.

I am starting to put the fenders, running boards, side splash shields, & front fenders on the frame for Pre-Assembly. I am looking at the hardware required to do so. Now my question is this, what Hardware is period correct/ acceptable:

1-Machine Screws, Slotted Round Head
2-Cap Screw, Hex Head

Since all of these components are on flat surface I assume they are not countersunk type, as there is no bevel/ angle on any of the surfaces, and since all the holes are ROUND, assume none are carriage bolts either. Also from my research andreading looks like most everything was machine screw, slotted round head, yet i have sen some hex bolts !! where were the hex bolts mianly used ??

There are a few places that have Square holes, and these location I will be using carriage bolts.

Also seen many post and threads in regards to material to use to do this. Should I just go standard Steel or Zinc Coated Steel, or upgrade to the 18-8 ?? I know with the Standard Steet/ Zinc Coated it is prone to rusting, but most of the hardware will be painted. With 18-8 have to deal with the weaker metal and galling. I know you can use Anti-Sieze to help with this as well.

I was thinking Steel for most parts, and then 18-8 for the bed strippign and bolts as they will be in contact with the wood, which loves to attract moisture.

Would like to know what you recommend, your thoughts, and what you did, and why... All a big learning process, and i have my mind WIDE open to LEARN :-)

Are you using a factory assembly manual and a shop manual? The assembly manual shows great good pics of the hardware and gives their part number which you can look up in the Master Parts Cat. I would never have finished without all three books.
BTW I decided on using button-head hex bolts rather than the original for ease in attaching and removing.

I have the 1930 Repair Manual, and just ordered the 1929-1930 & 1929-1932 Master Parts List. What is the Factory Assembly Manual, have not heard nor seen that one ( that I know of ) Where can I acquire one for a 1930 ?!?

haven't heard of an assembly manual that old Fan, but you might find more info here in the future
