Just picked up a '59 Fleetside with a 283 and 4spd. What is best way to determine if the engine is the original? Also it is running very rough with 2 fuel filters in line, is first step to rebuild carb and get fuel tank lined to avoid rust issues? Your advise is appreciated.

There is a machined pad on the block just ahead of the passenger's side cylinder head. There will be a letter code at the end of the block number which will identify the original-equipment installation. Post the number/letter combination here, or look it up in any of several charts available on the web.

Start with the fuel tank otherwise spoiled tank will result in numerous carbs repairs.

Pull all the fuel lines and filters, clean the tank and lines. Two filters in the line might hint at a crappy tank and previous problems. Probably one or both filters is clogged. I'd clean the tank and get it over with. No sense wondering about it and guessing what the problem may be. Post the numbers from the front pad as HotRodLincoln suggested. A casting number is on the rear of the block on the drivers side, near where the clutch housing bolts to the engine. That number is also useful.

Block ID shows F3i0m; the I and M are caps.

Thanks to all for the responses below. I'll start with the fuel tank and lines.
