OK, looking to get started on my project 1930 Chevrolet AD Universal - Canopy Express Truck I need to get the engine out of the bed so i can place it on my bench or dolly till i am ready to install inthe frame.

I would like to know the weight of the engine in general, fully assembled no liquids. (You can see my engine in the post pictures) I can GUESS what the weight is but would like to KNOW what the true weight is.

Also what points on the Engine or method to lift this thing out of the bed with out doing ANY damage or harm to the Engine itself. Also the points/ method to lift to install in the frame ?!? Figure using a standard engine hoist, unless a special tool is required for this. I can provie moredetails/ pictures if needed.

My engine is a 1957 235 Straight Six. I can't help you with your engine's true weight, but it's most likely not over the 1500 for that leveler. Another good investment is Grade 8 bolts from your local hardware or tractor supply store. That'll help you lift it with better piece of mind.

As far as lift points, see if you can find an old shop manual or something similar for that truck and engine. They usually list the lift points. I prefer to use two head bolts, but I know everyone does it different ways. The only surefire way to know would be to check the manual or have one of the much better informed than me guys chime in. Either way, that leveler has been a sound investment for me.

I recently had a remanufactured 235 delivered to me and the weight was listed as 400 lbs. This is without the bell housing, the manifolds, water pump, generator, etc. Just the assembled block with oil pan and timing gear cover.

I just pulled a 250 out. I use a mounting hole on the passenger side at #2 cylinder and a intake mounting bolt around #4 cylinder. These engines are relative light, so 3/8" bolts are plenty for lifting. Key is to keep the chain equal length from the center.

I have a 29 + a 30 , and sevral parts cars and trucks, I once traded a engine block striped with main bearing caps ,sent the engine block UPS! I belive it's weight was 140 LBS two people can lift a 29 engine with crank pistons cam,ect ,with out the head very easily,
The head bolts make a good place to lift, I think I lifted my 29 engine complete using a chain bolted to the valve cover studs, but I'd wouldn't do that now .
Do you have the shop manual? The original Chevrolet manual tells and shows pictures of pulling the engine , also there is repo "SERVICE BULLITENS" available, very helpful.

ok, I dug out my manual (Brand New) Chevrolet Repair Manual Universal Series AD-LR, and from the reading and diagrams, looks like they remove the valve cover, remove 2-3 head bolts and install lifting eye bolts and remove in that manner :/

Was hoping to be able to lift it and move it with out tearing it down and taking the chance of measing up critical parts, ie head threading and such. Ughhh.... Considering the engine and tranny are supposed to be rebuilt.

Are you pulling the engine and transmission together?

I have pulled many 216/235/261 engines by attaching the load-leveler's chains to rocker arm attachment bolts, leaving the rocker arm assembly in place. I know this might not be recommended, but, it has always worked for me.

No need to pull the cover, the passenger side has some empty 3/8-16 threaded holes up around the distributor, use one of those with a 1" spacer to keep the chain off the valve cover. On the drivers side, just remove one of the intake/exhaust mounting nuts, add the chain and replace the nut. The stud will be more then strong enough.

I have pulled and installed big block Chryslers with trans attached using only 3/8" bolts with out problems.

We were able to get the engine out the the bed with the help of my neighbors x2 and his engine lift/ hoist. Picked it up and put it down on a set of dollies I had, so I can push and move it around as needed. Found out my Neighbor with the Lift also owns a bolt !! a 1948 Chevrolet Pick-Up, Pretty Nice truck !

We used a 1" endless sling inde each end of the motor, and lifted her up and pulled her back, no problem.

Slowly and Steadily we go.
