What were the factory grease pencil markings on the firewall for?

The marks on my `59

Usually they were assembly markings as a building process step was completed and ok'd by the line inspector. They can vary widely as often they were just someones initials and/or an assembly code dedicated to that inspector.

Mine seems to have been a bit more explicit on my 57 3100...it's now just a line of rust (as is much of the rest of the truck), but you can understand it...
