Its pretty decent shape and would like to keep it that way.Does anyone know of a good rust preventative?I was considering painting up the floor pans underneath and the frame with that POR 15 stuff. Before I do,I figured Id see if anyone out there has any experience with it or has something better? Thanks | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 | POR15 is good. Just reordered some this week. Go to their web site and read up. There is prep involved.

It's tuff and adheres best to textured surfaces such as rusty metal that has had the scale rust removed. Grease and oil need to be removed first. The surface MUST be dry and clean, (but not spotless). If you paint it over a bolt and nut, I doubt you will ever get be able to get it apart again. It is sensitive to sunlight (UV rays) and will discolor and fade, so keep that in mind.
Having said all that, I am just about ready to paint my truck's frame with the stuff. A quart goes a long way.

This comes up fairly often here. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 293 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 293 | Just to look in a differant direction, I am in the process of covering the frame on our 66 Burb, and have been looking into the Eastwood products. From what I have figured out, the Rust Convertor is for something that is solid rust. The Rust Encapsulator, seems to be more for a minimal rust, bare metal, paint kind of thing. There are a number of reviews for it, and it seems to be extremely well liked, and not as severe or costic as the Por 15. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 143 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 143 | You might also check Zero Rust--it has been mentioned here and they have a web site. | | | | | Joined: May 2012 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2012 Posts: 14 | Ordering a gallon of por15.Hopefully thatll be enough for the undercarriage and a few tiny spots on the exterior. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 308 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 308 | You may want to make sure you wear old clothing and some sort of gloves, this stuff is real hard to get off when it gets on your skin, if you spray wear a good respirator it is real bad for your lungs. If you have not ordered yet I would recommend ordering the smaller cans, after it is opened it is hard to preserve the left over. Some have good ideas as to how to preserve but it doesn't always work and you could waist a lot.
Anyway, that’s my 2 cents worth.

A quart will do two coats on a frame and maybe some left over for some touch ups. Unless you get a super price for a gallon I agree with Ed. Buy it in Quart cans. Note: I do know that the pint size cans vs the quart size is real expensive. If you must guy a gallon go to the local paint story and get you a couple empty NEW cans from them and divide it up. This stuff will harden if not careful. (I drill a hole in the middle of the lid and keep it covered with a piece of duct tape. Have a can I've used out of for over a year and its still good. Pour out small amounts at a time or it'll skim and get thick on you before you know it)...but I still like it! | | | | | Joined: May 2012 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2012 Posts: 14 | Thanks for the info guys!I didnt know this stuff was semi hard to keep after opening.Luckily I hadnt ordered yet.Ill go for a couple smaller cans;) | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,750 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,750 | I'll go for a couple smaller cans;) That's exactly what i've done Kain,I learned the hard way too regarding the quart can. Here's what I ordered from my local POR supplier. Six-pack Like Alvin mentions it's slightly more expensive this way but a little goes a long way and the extra cost is offset by the lack of wasted paint. I've just to do the underside of my fenders and hopefully my truck will last another 60+ years!

Most inportant is don't paint directly out of original container. Transfer an amount you think you can use in a timely fashion to a throw away container and reseal the new container with the addition of a plastic wrap to help seal the can.

Im guessing any old paint brush will do the trick?I got a box with several disposable types. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 | Based on all that Ive heard,I think the pint cans will do. Im guessing any old paint brush will do the trick?I got a box with several disposable types. It will if it's clean. Any leftovers on bristle will make the job harder because POR15 will gel quicker on a dirty brush. And expect to through the brush away after use.In my experience, POR15 won't clean off the bristles readily.

The worst that can happen with the cheap brushes is a bristle pull out of the brush. you can usually "drag" it real quickly to an inconspicuous place ...trial and error will be your guide!! | | | | | Joined: May 2012 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2012 Posts: 14 | Yep.The cheapy ones is what I got.So Ill give it a go and see how I do Thanks again to everyone for all the advice | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,750 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,750 | And finally......... I found that rubbing a thin layer of vaseline over exposed skin right before you start the brushing process will drastically ease the removal of the POR-15 that does get on you when it comes time to clean yourself up- | | |
