Was under ole blue today spraying the brake lies with Liquid Wrench in anticipation of starting a brake job tomorrow, and noticed there were no adjusting slots in the backing plates. The '67 & '68 I grew up with had them. How do I back the shoes off and reset them after reassembly? Anybody run into this before? Color me befuddled...

They should have self adjusters on them. My '65 c10 has self adjusters on the drum brakes. Ya get it as close as ya can to where you can put the drum back on it. Once you drive it, it should adjust to where it needs to be.

If there is no slot, there *might* be a piece of metal that 'punches' out. Remember to put a rubber plug in it, if you punch it out.

Some had them on the wheel mounting side of the drum. My 66 GMC is that way, threw me for a minute.Larryw

When I did the rears a couple of years ago there were no adjustment slots, but there might have been slots in the original drums. I'll check the front drums tomorrow to see if the slots might be there. If not, I'll hope I can get the drums off and get everything back together. I'll also look for knockouts in the backing plates. Just wish I had a torch to add slots when necessary.

I agree with don, forget the torch. If you have to, go on the backside and grind off the ends of the pin that go through the springs that hold the shoes on. Maybe you can pull it all off without too much trouble. I can't emagine the adjuster holes would not be there somewhere. Look real close as you would be surprised what you can miss. At little grease and dirt cover a lot. Larry

There are slot knockouts in the face of the drums close to the edge. That's the way my 66 C10 was.

The knockouts were in the drums. I realized the other trucks I worked on when I was growing up were C20s, which have the slots in the backing plates. Learn something new everyday. All was going well today until I tried to get the lines and hoses to part ways. Twisted both lies off because they were rusted up. Time to start shopping for new lines...but I pretty much expected it to happen. Oh well.
