When I originally checked out my '64 C10, I brought along my father-in-law. He is a '61 year old ASE certified tech that has actually owned a '65 C10.

When the truck was first started, until it got warmed up, the was this loud, intermittent, whinning/rubbing noise coming from under the hood, mostly pronounced on the drivers side. He told me he thought it was the old alternator... So, I wasn't too concerned. Two days ago, I did a motor flush. Since then, it has gotten louder and more persistant. It ALMOST sounds to me like there is something in the motor that isn't getting any oil. Sounds kind of like something metal, rotating against something else metal, with no lubrication.

Any thoughts or suggestions on what could be the actual cause?

Inline 6 or V-8?

First thing I would do is remove the v-belts and start it up. If the noise is gone then it is either the alternator or the water pump (or the power steering pump if so equipped).

If the noise persists I'd pull the timing chain cover and inspect it for wear.

Does it change when you push the clutch in?

It's GENERALLY only heard at idle... But, I have heard it while driving. Does NOT go away with the clutch pushed in.

Not to hijack, but be sure to let us know what it is. My truck periodically (like once every couple months) makes a god awful high pitched wailing/rubbing noise just like you described.

I find if I bring the truck to a stop and hit the brake pedal, it goes away after about 5-10 seconds and stops completely until the next time.

It sounds like its coming more from the bell housing/tranny though.

Is there anything turning when the truck is sitting still idling that the brakes would affect when pressed?

Assuming you are sitting there with the clutch pushed in, I would guess throw out bearing or piolet bushing.

I've been EXTREMELY busy, so I haven't been on in a while. The noise turned out to be the alternator. About a week after posting this, it seized up completely.

I had the same problem on my last road trip to Connecticut.

Had the alternator rebuilt, and it has been fine since it was done.

I heard that once.....made a screech sound that would raise the dead.
That turned out to be a bad rod bearing.
We emory papered the journal and put the same bearing back on it, it went another 2 years with daily use. hard to believe, but true.

On my '54 1/2 ton, I have a awful metal on metal sound when de accellerating (gearing down). It goes away if I push and hold the clutch in.
Any thoughts? I was thinking the throw out bearing.
