old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2010 Posts: 14 | I have a 1964 c50, and was wondering if I could get away from the widow maker rims, by swapping the hubs/drums and wheels over to the dayton setup. Are the wheel bearings and brake parts interchangeable between the two? Thanks in advance! | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy audey, yes you can do that if you like, that's a big job. I assume you have the Kelsey 5/10 bolt wheels, there are tubeless versions of wheels out there with that bolt pattern, so I would look for some of those first. Widow makers is a term that is being misused, in my mind the only true widow maker is the Firestone RH-5, any multi-piece wheel that does not come apart in the center is safe to work with if the pieces are in good shape, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | Can you post a picture of the rims in question?
Bobb is right, the term is very often misapplied and if you have lock ring wheels, there is no problem with reusing them. It would save a ton of work on your part.

I have a lead on a truck that is going to be scrapped that supposedly has the Dayton wheels on it. It also has a radiator, shroud, and parking brake parts that I need. I had a buddy help me change the tires on my truck, and I sure don't like messing with the split rims! Are the Dayton adapters easy to find, and expensive if you can find them? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | If the two trucks use the same axles, it is quite a simple thing changing hub and drum assemblies. I ran open center wheels on everything from the early 60's until the mid 90's. I went to hub piloted because of the simplicity of outboard drums. If you can grab a donor, I would do it. Dayton adapters are pretty hard to find. | | | | | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2010 Posts: 14 | Thanks for replys. Hopefully the donor truck will work out. I guess if the axles are different, I can swap out the complete axles. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | Swapping axles is also a rather simple matter. I would sure grab the donor before it goes for scrap. | | | | | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2010 Posts: 14 | Well, the donor truck turned out to be a late sixtys model. It has the 10 lug wheels on it. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 10 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 10 | Hi I saw your post. The donor truck has 10 lug wheels? This might be something I need. Could I get some more info. Thanks Vince | | | | | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2010 Posts: 14 | yes, I'll try to get you more info.
