I got it all the way up to 48 mph and the engine sounded like it was ready to come apart. I would like to get into a newer axle with standard 10 bolt budd wheels and hydraulic brakes. A ratio in the high 4's to low 5's would be good. Has anyone done this swap to recommend an axle that will match the spring width ?

That could still be an option, depending on what I find for gear ratios in a newer axle.

The hub is slightly larger, bore out wheels and cover plates if you have them, can use your 20" wheels; or can use 19.5" wheels(common), look too small on the truck though, or 22.5(hard to find) from '50's farm trucks.

'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed. '55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
