I have a 1951 chevy 4400 with a 235. Is the No.1 cylinder toward the front, or the rear?

Unfortunately, it's not a straight 1-2-3-4-5-6 sequence. The cylinders fire in a sequence of 1-5-3-6-2-4, which, if you'll notice, alternates from front to rear. It takes two turns of the crankshaft to fire all 6 cylinders. The simple way to do the valve adjustment is to watch the distributor rotor, and adjust the valves on each cylinder as the rotor points toward the spark plug wire going to that cylinder. Good luck!

Back when I was working on these trucks in VA, that age "ditty" would not have worked. It would have had to start with 13.
