I have a '54 235 with the down tube broken off of the crankcase ventilator. The remaining part seems very secure. How is that held in?

Just a push fit I believe, mine just pulled out

Try tapping an old screwdriver between the pipe and the block, once you get some worked inside you should be able to grab it with a pliers and work it out. It might help to spray some carb spray around the pipe, that will help loosen some of the oil and varnish that has built up around it.

If I'm not mistaken the lower part bolts to the side of the block with a little tab and the top part just pushes in. At least mine does.

The tab utilizes one of the pan bolts. Top just pushes in.
