Picked up a 48 1/2 ton at a sale without a title. I would like to try to get a title for it but not sure how to go about it. This was a estate sale and the family don't know where title is. I do have a bill of sale if thats any help. Or is this a parts truck only ?? Thanks

Go to your local DMV with the Bill of Sale and find out from them what you need to do. If the estate sale was a licensed auctioneer I think they would be obligated to provide clear title to the property.

You can put in for a lost title as long as you know who the owner was,should be under his name.

Vern is dead on with his advise. Your state licensing authority are the folks you'll have to deal with so they are the one's you need to ask about the process they have in place. All states have a process to deal with your issue.

With the Bill of sale in hand you should be able to do a bonded title. I got a bonded title without a bill of sale

Ask the family if they can get a duplicate title from mvd if anyone of them has the power of attorney for the previous owner.

power of attorney ends when the person dies. It then goes to the executor of the estate. Yes, u can probably get a title. Be persistant and patient with your DMV

Yours is a common problem/question brought up on this forum and every old car/hotrod forum on the web. The best advice is to deal directly with your local DMV/state licensing agency office.
Don't do anything fraudulent ot illegal. It's not worth it.

In the past I've talked to people who have been able to get a bonded title in Maryland. Also talked to a fellow whose 38 had been titled the wrong year and he was able to get it corrected. My 38 was retitled a 42 when the engine was replaced in 1942. The numbers on title are still the 38 ID numbers.

Like they said contact the DMV, I what thought the same think on my 42 Chevy pickup, all I had was a bill of sales and a noterized paper stating that they were the legal owners of the truck, there was no numbers on my truck and the motor had been replaced, I call DMV and they came out and looked all over for any numbers, and then they took the numbers off the motor and signed off on it and I had a title

Some old cars/trucks were titled by the engine # and some by the VIN number. Just depends on the year and state. My 52 was titled by the engine # which had been altered, and didn't match the title. Va. DMV sent out a state police officer and he ended up meeting me at the metal recycleing place to crush the motor! It's illegal to poccess a motor which the #'s have been altered. Anyway, he took pictures as they crushed the bottom end (block only) but he then issued me a new title by the # on the door. So everything worked out.

When I worked in the garage in the late 50's in Colorado, when we changed a motor we would grind off the number on the replacement and restamp it with the origional motor number. Times have changed.
