Were rear bumpers an option in 1958 or were they a standard item?

Story I'm told is that they were only an option. No such thing as a "factory" bumper in '58. You got them at the dealer or aftermarket.

That is correct, the rear bumper was optional. Most were dealer installed, with many being aftermarket, rather than GM. I've seen several different styles, Winchester (yes, the gun company) and Bardon (?) are the 2 I see the most around here. There is an RPO code for a rear bumper, RPO 218, so it is possible that at least some trucks did have a bumper installed at the factory.

I do believe that you could get rear bumpers installed from the factory, but it was an option and cost more.

the rear bumper could have been ordered as a factory option from 55 onward, and could have been purchased from dealers as well
