Depends on the transmission model and rear axle model (gear ratios really),
All 5 answers you've heard could be right for different applications and situations.

Just about all 5 and 2 setups work the same in the 1st 3 gears. 1 low, 1 high; 2 low, 2 high; 3 low, 3 high on an upshift and just the opposite. If you have a wide ratio 4th and 5th you go 4 low, 4 high and then 5 low and 5 high. If it is a close ratio or so called working 5th, you go to 4th low, 5th low, then back to 4th high and finally 5th high. If you are upshifting, pull the button up and let off the gas slowly until you feel the rear shift. If you practice, you can feel it on the transmission stick. After it has shifted, give it gas again. On a downshift, push the button down, let off the gas momentarily and give it the gas again. If you are split shifting on an upshift, push the button down while you are passing through neutral and give it the gas when you are in the next gear. When you are downshifting, you are actually going from low axle to high axle so you need to give it a moment to shift. I think the instructions call to use the clutch, but back in the day of 5 and 2 gears, no one ever used the clutch. I always recommended drivers to practice in the lower gears like between 1st and 2nd. Once you have mastered the shifting, try the next higher gear.
