| | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 45 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 45 | I have a 1948 3/4 ton. The suspension is 100% stock. Any advise on updating the old knee shocks to more modern shocks? I have seen shock mounts, but they are for the 1/2 ton.
Can some please tell me this is a cheap and easy fix?
| | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 217 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 217 | This is what I did. I have a 46 1/2 ton that I converted to tube shocks from knee action. I got some lower front tube type shock mounts off an Advance design series (47-50something.) that was in a junk yard. The mount was in a straight up and down orientation, I've seen some that have an angle towards the front of the truck I guess the choice is up to you. Anyway, got the lower shock mounts mounted to the leaf springs and measured the travel. Then I got on the monroe web site and found a shock with that travel with posts mounts on both ends ( choices are post or fork mount etc). These turned out to be off a 53 vette.
I made some upper mounts off of flat steel, bent them into a 90, welded some webbing for added strengh, attached to the frame and been running that way for about 5000 miles.

I wouldn't hesitate putting the 1/2 ton shock and mounts on a 3/4 ton. I looked in my LMC catalog and they had the same bracket and shock listed for the 1/2 and 3/4 ton for 50-55. Not to mention they used the same leaf spring setup from 47-55.1. The front is indeed the same as a 1/2 ton. The rear however, is much different. The leaf springs are mounted out board of the frame. In a 1/2 ton, the leaf springs are directly under the frame.
