The bottom catch on the left barn door of my '51 burb has never worked. Mostly due to it being stuck in the up position. I got it loose the other day, but it still does not catch as it seems the strike on the bottom sill is too far back toward the front of the truck. Is this adjustable in any way?

Kurt, I do remember having some problems with mine. While keeping the right door open I would just sit down and first make sure the latch was low enough to catch and not slip off. Then I moved the bottm catch piece back to where I could see it needed to be..... held it and opened the door then marked the holes. I did have to slide forward a bit but ended up not having ot drill a hole.

The striker on my 51 panel is adjustable. The holes in the sill are slotted allowing it to move forward/back approx +/- 1/8 inches.

Make sure that your latch is not worn so bad that it can't catch anymore. There is not much adjustment available for these latches other than a little movement by the slotted holes. The striker may also be worn and may have to have some welding to build it up. If it is height you need, make a rubber gasket to fit underneath the bottom strike.

You can also adjust the bottom "catch" by turning the long threaded rod. Remove the inspection cover at the handle area and loosen the set screw and then you can turn the rod with a screw driver at the bottom catch. The same adjustment can be made for the top catch.

I was able to get the catch to work.

I had to remove the strike, and re-install it as far as it would go to the rear of the truck.

Then I made three thick gaskets to go under it.

Then I had to slightly bend the rear sill slightly upward using a 2X4 and a floor jack. I was rear ended years ago (my neck still hurts) and it bent the sill.

Finally, I had to file the strike to make a sharp edge. It had gotten rounded off enough over the years that the carch on the door would jest slide off.

Now it works. Joy.

good job Kurt. I had to weld and then file my "catch" back off. I also pulled the same trick as you but had forgotten it until you mentioned it....I used double homemade gaskets under it to.

Now, your all ready to drive it down to the Southern Reunion.... right?

A few more tweaks and a good tune up and I'll be ready to go. Wife and daughter have bought into the ride.

How far are you from Charlotte? We might spend the night there.
