I'm just starting on a 49 project. I'm going to build a daily driver, and like everyone else, $5.00 a gal gas is a concern. I have a 283, and was thinking about mating it to a T-5, or a T-56 transmission. Just wondered if anyone else has tried this combination. I'm not wanting a hot rod truck, just something that has decent power, and I can afford to drive on the highway. I bought a set of 2.73 on Ebay and after installing them decided I wanted a bit lower ratio so I bought a set of 3.73 gears. I still have them and probably won't ever use them if the 2.73's prove OK. Unless you plan on racing a higher gear set will help with fuel consumption.
And yes the Trans AM is the same width 62".

If it is you can always swap it out for something that works better.
