Now that I have the driver’s side front fender and inner fender off of my ’41 it could be a good time to try and free up the hear riser on the stock 216. Does anyone have any good tricks, short of removing the manifold and drilling it out right after I manage to break the shaft???

Kip's41,

Heat, Kroil, wiggle, Kroil, wiggle, heat, tap, wiggle, Kroil, wait, cross fingers and chant! If the bi metal spring is still intact, remove it before the heat phase of the recipe.

That spring sometimes breaks off in the slit in the shaft. If this is the case, removal of the manifold would make this repair much easier.

If you can't get it working, I think that the Car and Truck Shop in CA sells new units.

A lot of times the flapper is burnt out, so even if you unstick the shaft it may not do any good.

Kip's41,

If you are determined to repair the heat riser properly, it will probably require you to remove the intake/exhaust combo to separate the two and gain access to the heat riser innards.

The bolts that secure the two manifolds to each other will sometimes break when wrenched on. This means new bolts, easy outs and much creativity. Although it doesn't always happen this way, that area is usually a 'frozen zone'.

If all this were to happen, with just a bit more energy, you could have the manifold combo surfaced at a auto machine shop and the whole enchilada would be good for another 40 years.

If you can fix the heat riser to your satisfaction from the outside, this all becomes a moot point. These are just some points to think about. smile

I have a 61 fleetside that had the same problem. I sprayed penetrating oil all over it several times then semi-gently tapped the ends of the rod both ways, soaked it some more. Finally it broke loose. Now it is free and can easily turn bt the spring tension. Good luck.

Mine was stuck open and is still stuck open. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle in trying to unstick it.

Hay Tiny, this may sound like a dumb question but when looking from the out side which way is the large counter weight when the thing is open ?? I did know at one time, but that was about 1959 and I have forgotten

The weight on mine appears to be pretty much at the 12 o'clock position.

When the weight is horizontal it is closed. When it's open it's at about a 45 degree angle.
