Thanks in advance,

Good Plan What number did the tag agency run? was it the door post S/N? Did you try running the engine number? Hopefully someone from your area will be along with some advise. | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,464 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,464 | Good plan, wait until you have a clean title in hand - then start the restoration.
Each state is different on how to go about getting a title that has been lost. You could go on-line to your DMV and you might get the answers you need there but I would just go to your nearest DMV office and make friends with the clerk there and work with them to get it done.

Most states used the engine number through '55.

In WA and VA, door-opening plate on one title and engine plate on the other title.
When I registered 4 of those vehicles, DMV only cared about what was on the last title/registration.

I purchased the truck without a title, but felt comfortable in doing so. I have started the restoration process, but not very far along. In Texas, you apply for a "bonded title" when the title has been lost. After so many years, without someone else claiming the same vehicle, the title will revert to a conventional title. I hired a company to file all paperwork and do all the legwork...well worth the $100 fee. The "title" company suggest the truck be titled using the door jamb ID plate in the event the engine is replaced in the future. | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 | Not sure what state you are from, but I hade same problem with my 49. Took the bill of sale filled out some forms and one week later a sheriff was knocking on my door with a new number and literally placed it on my drivers side door post. Oh by the way I did have to provide them with three pictures of the truck. Hope this helps. good luck. red49 | | | | Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 17 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 17 | Just got off the phone with the Oklahoma tax commision...They said I would probably need a court order to get legal owenership or do a affidative of ownership and application of title though the an oklahoma state tag office then they would look at it and decide to give me a title or not. I got such a headache.... | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | Get one from Broadway title co. in Alabama. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Or get your money back their are plenty of trucks for sale with good papers, your right you may have a big headache | | | | Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 17 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 17 | Im going to try to go though Oklahoma Tax commission first...but I was wandering if it would be unethical or illegal to get a title for a early 80s chevy truck and use the frame off of the 80s and put the 50s chevy body on it? Or is that even possible? Just wandering | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 | As far as putting the body on a newer frame, that is what my truck is but I had the ownership of both vehicles before I merged them. I could have got a "Builders Title" by surrendering both titles but that would have made my truck a 2009 model subject to safety and emission standards of 2009. I don't know about OK. but in CO the registration and ownership fees are more expensive the newer you get. My title is 1953, I guess I could have used the 1973 title but the truck sure don't look anything like a 1973 and it certainly don't look anything like a 2009.
If the paperwork suits you and the state I guess it is good enough but you will surely have problems if you ever try to sell it. | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 583 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 583 | Is it possible to find someone with a truck that is parted out, but still have a live title? Or buy a parts truck with a title. I had to do that with a 35 Chev 3 window coupe back in the 70's.
