Not sure if this belongs here but I have a question...I purchased the 50 chevy from a friend for 200 dollars in 07 or 08 but he did not have a title for the vehicle..I tried to go to the tag agency and file for lost title but it came back that the VIN number was wrong which I got directly off of the vehicle...The truck is not in any running order and I am hesitant to do any kind of restoration on it until I get the title...My question being is how do you get a tile for a old truck?

Thanks in advance,

Thomas

Good Plan

What number did the tag agency run? was it the door post S/N?
Did you try running the engine number?

Hopefully someone from your area will be along with some advise.

Good plan, wait until you have a clean title in hand - then start the restoration.

Each state is different on how to go about getting a title that has been lost. You could go on-line to your DMV and you might get the answers you need there but I would just go to your nearest DMV office and make friends with the clerk there and work with them to get it done.

Good luck!

On a raised boss next to the distributor. Most states used the engine number through '55.

I have bought five 1947-55 trucks from Oregon(1), Washington(2), and Virginia(2). 3 used the door-opening plate code and 2 used the engine code. In WA and VA, door-opening plate on one title and engine plate on the other title.

When I registered 4 of those vehicles, DMV only cared about what was on the last title/registration.

I am currently in the same situation (maybe a little further along). I purchased the truck without a title, but felt comfortable in doing so. I have started the restoration process, but not very far along. In Texas, you apply for a "bonded title" when the title has been lost. After so many years, without someone else claiming the same vehicle, the title will revert to a conventional title. I hired a company to file all paperwork and do all the legwork...well worth the $100 fee. The "title" company suggest the truck be titled using the door jamb ID plate in the event the engine is replaced in the future.

Not sure what state you are from, but I hade same problem with my 49. Took the bill of sale filled out some forms and one week later a sheriff was knocking on my door with a new number and literally placed it on my drivers side door post. Oh by the way I did have to provide them with three pictures of the truck. Hope this helps. good luck. red49

I had title issues on a 32 Dodge Bros. in the 90's. Used Titles Unlimited in Birmingham AL. phone is 205-853-9633. Address is 4485 Pinson Valley Pkwy, Birmingham, AL 35215. It went smooth and I got a clean title. Best of luck.

Im going to try to go though Oklahoma Tax commission first...but I was wandering if it would be unethical or illegal to get a title for a early 80s chevy truck and use the frame off of the 80s and put the 50s chevy body on it? Or is that even possible? Just wandering

As far as putting the body on a newer frame, that is what my truck is but I had the ownership of both vehicles before I merged them. I could have got a "Builders Title" by surrendering both titles but that would have made my truck a 2009 model subject to safety and emission standards of 2009. I don't know about OK. but in CO the registration and ownership fees are more expensive the newer you get. My title is 1953, I guess I could have used the 1973 title but the truck sure don't look anything like a 1973 and it certainly don't look anything like a 2009.

If the paperwork suits you and the state I guess it is good enough but you will surely have problems if you ever try to sell it.

Is it possible to find someone with a truck that is parted out, but still have a live title? Or buy a parts truck with a title. I had to do that with a 35 Chev 3 window coupe back in the 70's.

Occasionally here on Stovebolt and other similar sites, you see such offerings. There is always disagreement on the validity of such a purchase for the use of a title. Think it through before buying one.

I think ill try the tax comission way...the seller said he would do a new bill of sale with me and hopefully once if fill out some tax forms i can get the tax comission to do some research and finally get a title for the truck...fingers crossed...if not I may part out the truck and use the money on another similar 1950 truck purchase with a title..
