Just got a Newport Engineering 12 volt wiper motor. The instructions say I cant use the original switch location or the contacts will rub against the motor. Has anyone found a way to use the original vacuum wiper switch in its original location to operate the electric wipers? Is there a source for a low profile switch

Yeah... new port sells one.

Did you buy the motor from a vendor or directly from new port?

new port engineering / wipers

check out the options/accessories section.

There is a switch... and an adapter to their switch if you want to use the stock knob.

you could put a linkage under the dash to operate a toggle switch from the stock knob. I did this on my truck to run a home made 12v wiper setup from the original vacuum wiper switch. There's some pictures here of the setup at the bottom of the page.

what newport model number did you get?
They have one that will clear the choke and one that wont

I used the NE4753CCT

The switch should fit.

Thanks for the replies. I bought the motor from Brothers and its the NE4753CT. Great suggestions....you guys are awesome. I am concerned about the length of the optional switch from Newport but I really want to retain my original knob. With your help, I think I can make it happen.

Do you plan on using your choke in the standard location?

DADs50 is right on the money. You got to have one with the two "C's" in the number. I got mine from JimCarter and its a Newport motor/switch. Went in alike a breeze and all I had to adjust was one wiper blade from outside the truck.
The 4753CCT fits and does NOT interfere with the choke.

Buying through JCarter I saved a few bucks because I got the 10% discount and only the actual shipping. Rockport would have been more.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

I definitely want everthing to fit in the stock position. I thought I had the right model...The vendor didnt advertise the fact that I had to change my choke. If I need to, I'll hopefully find a buyer for my NE4753CT and get the right model or I'll stay with my vacuum wipers. I'll do a trial fit this week end. Thanks for the heads up

I ran into the same problem.
I purchased my newport from classic parts who at the time did not disclose the interference problem

I called Newport and they let me send it to them for a replacement model that will clear. They just charged me a small shop fee.

Try calling Newport

Good luck

Hey Dads50...thanks for the great pics...is your extension for the stock knob the one available from NewPort? It doesn't look like anything they have. In fact, I called them and they do not recmmend their extension if the stock choke is retained. Will you share how you made the extension work?

No
I used a flexable drive shaft and adapted it. Mounted the modern switch under the dash.
Its kinda hokey but it worked for me.

You've got a great webpage of interesting pics Giles. I have great respect for you guys working on American vehicles and having parts so far away. It sure helps to have some engineering/machinist skills.
I worked 2 years in Bromley and do miss the beauty of Southern England. Cheers...
