Hi,
I am trying to get the distributor out of my '46 216. Shop manual refers to a pin, retaining the gear to the shaft. Where is that mysterious pin??
Thanks.

the pin there talking about holds the distribitor gear to the distribitor shaft, you shouldn't have to remove that unless your taking the distribitor apart to rebush or something. if i remember on mine there is a bolt holding the distribitor inthe block somewhere around the bottom by the vacuum advance which comes out with the distribitor. hope this helps

The distributor is held on only by the small bolt and advance plate at the base where it goes into the block. Some of these distributors are stuck due to oil and gunk buildup and require a fair amount of lubrication, a small pry bar and a twisting motion to get them out of the block.

The pin refers to a rolled pin in the drive gear on the end of the distributor shaft and once removed from the engine, is quite obvious.

The pin is in a hole thru the distributor shaft and its drive gear. It holds the gear to the shaft. Unless the pin is dislodged it should not prevent you from removing the distributor from the block.

Others have posted on how to remove this distributor from the engine.

DADS50, I see in the second picture you have an o-ring on the top groove. I have tried to do the same in the past but found it prevented the vacuum advance from twisting the distributor correctly. Did it work for you?

No,
thats a replacement distributor from NAPA and it came with the o-ring in that groove out the box.

that o-ring was a issue. Once I removed the o-ring the distributor worked fine.

I will add a note to that pic.

Thanks.

Thanks for the help!
I assumed it should come right out, but even with a pry bar and a hammer it will not budge!!
I have the oil pan off. Any ideas on how to get this darn thing out??

Does the shaft turn to indicate that something is not jammed?

So does this engine turn at all? Also I assume you removed the bolt holding the assembly down on the block. Can you turn the distributor? If you can then you want to turn it back and forth while pulling up gently. Don't use any pry bars.

Well since the engine is not turning, the shaft is only moving a little tiny bit. Yes - the vaccum mechansim is loose. I removed all the "guts" from the distributor including governor weights etc. SO the distributor housing is turning freely now.
Denny - I'd be happy to post a pic. Any particular angle etc??
Not a whole lot to see in my opion.

is the shaft coming up with the housing? if not the gears are stuck together. try turning the distributor shaft while pulling up.the shaft needs to turn indepently from the housing.it needs to turn as your pulling up to come out. mine was kind of stuck like that. might even help squirting a little squirrel [censored] around the shaft to loosen it up from distributor housing. then some down towards the dist. gear. once everything is loose just keep working it, soon or later it will pop out.

Thanks Mo. Yes- the housing is completely lose (you can turn it as many times as you want!:). Shaft itself comes up about half an inch. Not easy to turn the shaft now since I removed all the "guts". I keep trying.

I took the outer housig of the oil pump off today and the gears slid out.
Returned to the exterior of the engine was planning on continuing to work on the distributor...well,..it slid right out!

Sure glad it is out, but I would love to understand how all this happened!
