Im trying to take the side panels off my 1953 shortbed. I see the front is bolted in on either side by a few bolts. and the cross braces are held in by a bolt on each end. Is the back cross member just held in by 3 or 4 bolts on either side? Mine looks like it might be welded as well?

Yes, the bed is probably welded where the side panels meet the back side of the rear cross brace. Sometimes if the bed has been apart it will already be cut.

It's normally not very much and can be cut with a thin cutoff wheel in 4" angle grinder. Don't go very deep, just enough to cut through the weld bead.
