Some do have a shim between the mount and cab bottom. Shims are used to obtain the factory diminsions called out in the shop manual. I have seen some trucks that have as many as five shims. The threaded lock plates go inside the cab to prevent the bolts from pulling through the sheet metal. And if you can't afford twenty bucks for a manual then you can always refer to this till you can: http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/index.htm And after you can afford a manual it wouldn't hurt to send off a couple of bucks to TOCMP to help keep it going for future newbies. As Denny stated above, new shiny reprints of the shop manuals, the supplements, the owner manual, the factory accessory assembly manual and the factory assembly manuals are available for these old trucks.
