Looking for some opinions. I'm sitting on 2 nos Rochesters that I've been planning on using on my soon to be built 261. There are a few qualified people (here, and some that I know personally) that tell me that the Rochesters are problematic. Although, I've had good luck with the stock one currently on my truck which can get over 20mpg and runs GREAT with no leaks.
I've come across a couple of matching Stromberg BXOV-2 carbs and have been told by a ford engine builder that these would be good candidates for my new motor and dual intake, and he knows how to make them work well. He also know how to make the Rochesters work but sez the Strombergs have advantages.
Any of you here have experience with both? What are your thoughts?
One advantage is the Strombergs already have is that they fit the late 30s' Chevy aircleaners I want to use. I would have to fab an adapter for my Rochesters to fit the same cleaners.

Assuming the Strombergs are the proper size, I believe you will be extremely happy with them.

Strombers are great carbs but require a lot of tuning to keep em in sink ...well that was the expierience i had with them on my little Bro's dual carb MG ...if ya tinker with em every other week they run GREAT !....bought every 3 months we would have to take it down to have the vacume gauges put on it to dial it in ...the rest was just maint .

SW-Radual - the MG used BRITISH-made Strombergs (different company). The BXOV series were produced by Stromberg-USA.

So I found out something else that is interesting. The Strombergs fit my McGurk intake but are too small for my Edmunds intake even though both intakes are for a 235. Go figure.

Check the numbers stamped on the top of the fuel bowl covers, if the numbers match then the carbs should match. Stromberg made several different carbs, but the BXOV-2's are one of the best for 2X1 setups. Very reliable and easy to tune.
A good size for the 235 are the ones with a 1 5/23" venturi. That number would be cast into the carb right next to the gas inlet.
The early Strombergs BXOV-2's would fit the Offy intake for a 216 CI. The Offy intake for the 235 had a wider carb bolt spacing. But you can mill out the bolt holes on the BXOV-2 base to fit the wider 235 intake or you could use an intake for the 216 with the BXOV-s stock base and use it on a 235 CI.
If you have a matched pair of BXOV-2's with the 1 5/32" venturi you have a lucky find.

In the small circle both of mine are stamped 3/32". Also, both of them have p24300 stamped in the same small circle. I want to use these for a 261 stroker, .050 over, mild cam, 848 head w/ high lift springs, dual exhaust, HEI. I'm wondering if will these be sufficient?

Update. I now have 2 matching BXOV-2's w/ the 1-5/32" venturi. One is NOS and the other is in pretty good shape. I also have 2 that have the 1-3/32" venturi. I'll use these for mock up purposes. I wouldn't mind finding another NOS carb to match the one I have. Anyone?

Both the 216 McGurk intake and the 235 McGurk intake used the small based carburetor usually associated with the 216.

Here are some pics of the one I'm trying to find a match for. I've also included a sneak preview of my future setup. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2363528890071636143NswzUZ
I'll use the K&N filter for driving and the original looking mesh filter for show.

Here are some shots of my stromberg carbs on an edmunds intake. These are bxov-2's with the bases drilled for the larger 235 bolt spacing.

Bill - Just wondering if you welded (filled in and milled) the original holes in the bases and then redrilled or just elongated the existing holes?

Thanks,

Don

Bill,

That's a gorgeous setup. Don't intakes with the smaller bolt distance have a smaller bore as well? I would think you end up with a step between carb and intake. Or do you bore the intake to match the carbs?

Denny,

Google stromberg and then click on images.

Curt

Thanks,

My intake is for the larger carbs and I put the smaller carbs on it. I guess you're right though the intake bore will not match the carb.

I did make sure the head and the intake are matched. I am using a set of locator rings in the head to align the intake.

Bill

As long as the manifold inlet is larger than the carbs base you won't have any problems. The other way around would be a no-no.

bigmacdaddy:
You have a pair of 1 5/32" venturi BXOV's, this is good, but the numbers stamped on top of the fuel bowl covers will tell you if the two carbs were at one time a match or not. If the numbers stamped on top of the fuel bowl covers match then the only sure way of telling if you have a matched pair is to disassemble them to make sure that the power by-pass jets match, the main pump by-pass jets match, the main jets match, ,and the idle tubes match. Only then can you be 100 percent sure that you have a matched pair of carbs. If you get this far and everything matches you will be very happy with your Strombergs.
Don't get rid of your 1 3/32" strombergs just yet. I am working on putting 3 of the 1 3/32" BXOV's on a modified 261, which I think I can tune them for a daily driver. My project is still in the works. If you got the time check out my project and my Stromberg carbs at, http://community.webshots.com/user/oldfarted

If you need help with your Strombergs just e-mail me, I have put a lot of time and money into getting to know these little beauties.

Thanks Old Fart. Those pics are great. I have a 14-22 and a 2-22. The 2-22 is NOS. Both the carbs with the smaller venturis are stamped 14-17e. Are you saying you wish to trade?

bigmacdaddy:

The 14-22 was made for a Chevy and it is the carb the you want providing nobody has changed anything inside of it. THE CARB YOU WANT, PERIOD.
This is the exact carb that Frank McGurk used on his 2X1 setup. The actual box number is a 380269.
It should have:
#54 power by-pass jet
#58 pump by-pass jet
.058" main jet
and the idle tube should have #54 hole at the top and a #70 tube dia. at the bottom. The idle tubes are unmarked and would have to be measured with drill gages.

The 2-22 carb was made for a Ford and it should have:
#54 The same power by-pass jet --- GOOD
#56 pump by-pass jet --- NEED TO FIND A #58
.057" main jet-- WILL NEED TO FIND A .058" DIA.
And the idle tube is the same as your 14-22 carb --THAT IS ALSO GOOD and lucky.
Again it should have these sizes if nobody has replaced anything in the past. Being NOS i would doubt it.
So if all your numbers are good inside you will have to come up with:
a #58 pump by pass jet
and a .058" main jet.

Two BXOV rebuild kits, which are still out there at about $50. each

The .058" main jets are out here to be had, so that's no problem. (I have extras of these)
But the #58 pump by-pass jet may be harder to find ???? (I'm still looking for a supplier myself)

You are almost there, if you can find a #58 pump by-pass jet then you will have the perfict matched pair of BXOV-2's for your 2X1.

Do this and it will turn your 2-22 Ford carb into a 14-22 Chevy carb. ( I love these little jewels )

Now if you can not come up with a #58 pump by-pass jet, what I would reccomend would be to carefully drill out the #58 jet to make it a #56 size. At least your two carbs will match each other. I would want them to at least match each other on your set up, even though the smaller #58 would be the ideal size. And I would only do this as a last resort.

I am talking number size drills here, so the larger the # is the smaller the hole is in inches. (I know , I still get confused myself)

As far as a trade for your pair of 14-17e's.
e-mail, I'm always interrested in BXOV's

You have any questions feel free to e-mail me.
I hope some of this may help.

Good Luck !!
Ed

Old Fart, you've answered ALL my questions. I'll need those 14-17e's for a bit, but I'll let you know when they are available. Big thanks to all you guys. I'll keep you posted.
