I apologize in advance if I'm asking in the wrong place or if this has been covered (which I'm sure it has). I've searched and can not find any information. I have a 1950 3600, the serial number on the engine (stamped directly behind the dipstick) starts with MVD and than has a 6 digit number. I can not find what MVD is. The truck was built in LA in February 1950. Anyone have any ideas?

Just a guess since no one else is responding to your question. This may be a state assigned number for a replacement engine. 'MVD' could stand for 'Motor Vehicle Division' followed by the rest of the state assigned number. If you can check and see what states it has been titled in you may be closer to an answer. Someone else may have a better answer.

Here are locations of other codes. Post what you find and people will help to ID the year/size of the engine.

I went out last night looking for the other codes but could not find them. This engine appears to have about 50 years of grease and grime built on it so this weekend I will start cleaning the engine and see if I can find some more codes.

Do you know the State origin of the number? If so you could contact the Motor Vehicle Div of that State and inquire how or if they did it & when. Might be helpful in tracking things down.

I am officially giving up on figuring this out. I scrubbed and cleaned, there are no markings where they are supposed to be. The serial number is quite clear (blurry last three numbers in the picture here, but actually very clear in real life picture. I even had a neighbor come over and look for the numbers. Nothing. I will assume it was a factory replacement engine?

I can tell by the side mount bosses it is a 1952-54 engine.

Thank you, I will just call it a 52 - 54 216 and I bet any parts I need to buy will probably fit just fine. :-) It has two bolts in the valve cover so it is most likely a 216 I think. engine picture

216s were only made from 1937-53.
Can you post a pic of the pass side of the engine?

Hi Pre '68 Dave - I've loaded 5 pics of the passenger side of the engine here . They should be the first 5 pictures you see. I am curious to see what you think and than understand why? Thanks for your help.
