When I baught my truck I raced home and told my wife all about it and asked if she could run me out to pick it up. She was excited and said 'sure, lets go!'. When we pulled in and she got her first look at it she burst out laughing and couldn't stop. As I was trying to start the truck I could still hear her laughing in her car, tears rolling. I think that counts as the first comment on my truck. I still don't know if that's good or bad.

My truck has the 261 in it, which looks identical to the original engine. Someone asked me why I took out the flathead.

My favourite 'expert" comment was some guy telling me I could get a good paint job for $10K. The one that I enjoy is someone telling me about themselves or relatives driving the same kind of truck years ago on the farm.

As I was coming out of a third party mvd, getting my bond so I can get my title and registration on monday, a guy waiting out front starts asking about my '47 and what the plans are. I soon find myself getting a quick verbal resume and found he has over 20 years restoring old cars and lots of years with lead work. I t it was kind of funny the first comment I heard was from a guy looking to change the appearance.

I was showing a photo of my '40 to a friend, and a rather elderly couple he knew walked up, and the woman said: "Wow, look at all those curves!." Never did ask what kind of truck it was! smile

I had just got out of the '51 burb at the Lowes parking lot this afternoon, when a white guy about my age stops his car with the window down and says "is that a '53? My dad had a truck like that". He pulls to the side so he can get out and talk. Before I can turn around, a black guy about my age walks around the front of the my truck and says "Is this a '49? my dad had a truck like this".

The first guy says his dad had a '53 and always called his truck a "panel". It had no back side windows, and his dad was an electrical contractor. The second guy notes that his dad's truck was GMC, and that he always called it a "Carryall". He said his dad bought it because it would seat all nine of the family, and had one of the first automatic transmissions called a "hydromatic".

I took that opportunity to note that my dad had bought a "Suburban Carryall" in 1964 to transport all 7 of our family.

Needless to say,it was a striking moment. All of us remembered our long gone Fathers and the trucks from our childhood.

I was on on the way home with my new prize (a 1969 c-20 Panel) when a young couple with a couple of kids in a gas station first asked how old it was. Having just bought it I explained it was what was used before vans became common and it was a 1969. The guy looked at it and said, "so its a FORD?" Then they waved and drove off. I stood there with my mouth open and watched them go.
Certainly the oddest thing that has been said about!

A fellow in a parking lot said "My Grandpa used to have one of those!"

Now, my grandson will be able to say the same! Actually, he might say "My Grandpa used to own this truck!"

I was at the car show last weekend and this older coupler walked up to the truck. The wife sticks her head in the side window and yells to her husband “come smell how good this smells” the husband promptly yells back “I know what it smells like – very expensive, now get your head out of there!”

When I drove my 54 one ton panel home the first time my wife said to get in the garage ASAP. With its prime spots ect. It did not look good in front of our bed and breakfast! Now when it's out of the garage all the men that stop to look at it say what a beautiful truck it is, prime spots and all.

Hey, Stranger, I get the same thing! Just last night an older couple were talking to me about the truck and they asked "why doesn't the front axle have a steering rod?" I said, "it's behind the axle", and they were dumbfounded.

I still don't understand why manufacturers moved it to the front where it can get crushed by rocks and stumps?

In the last 10 years I've had this comment about 5 or six times-usually by someone in his 50's or 60's--" How long did it take you to do the conversion? Chevy never made a dually panel...) It's by far my favorite-then I get out the "backup" folder w/all my info, and they're always amazed!! 1946 Ton& 1/2 Dually Panel

A guy trying to impress his girlfriend with his vast knowledge of old cars asked me, "These old trucks got a lot better mileage than today's trucks, eh? 35? 40?"

My favorite comment(s) is the one I usually hear. It's happened so many times that it's become one of those,"Here we go again" kind of things.

I'm sure you all have heard this. Here's the scenario... I'm either getting out/getting in or loading/unloading my truck when I hear one of two things - "What year is it?" or "Nice truck, what year is it?" "It's a "65", I reply. Then the person either says, " I used to have a (year)" or "I have a (year)." or " My father/grandfather/uncle/brother/buddy has/had a (year)." Then they go on to tell me their story while inspecting my truck as they reminisce. Then after listening to their, at times, lengthy story, they might ask what engine that I have in it and then off they go. heh.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate their interest and it's cool to hear their stories, but that's what makes it funny to me now. I get a about two - three words in and if I'm lucky, they might ask me about the transmission.

Just bought a 54 3800 thats sat in the weeds for 20 years and towed it home Tuesday. Needless to say it needs a full restoration. I showed it to my just turned 3 y/o nephew and asked if he liked it. His response was " Uncle T why is your truck so messy?"

When I get asked about "the flathead", I just say that GM's flathead six was only used in 1935 & 1936 - the years before the first stovebolt-six.

When I drove my 1950 3600 back from California in the late 70's, I towed a '57 Chevy station wagon. It was early Sunday morning someplace in new Mexico and I was stopped at a traffic light. A '60 Chevy sedan with a couple of latino guys in it pulled up next me and the passenger with his arm hanging out over the door looked both of my vehicles up and down and said, "Man, California has been good to you".

These are necessarily favorites, but I hear them alot:

1) to my wife, every contractor or delivery man who has stepped foot in my garage asks "Does he want to sell it?"

2) to me, from everyone else "Are you done with that truck yet?"

My 19 year old daughter coined this one about my '62 C10.

"This thing drives like a tank!"

Now we just call it "The Tank" She loves to drive it and as soon as she finally gets her driver's license (she has been using a learners permit for the last two years) it will be her primary vehicle.

My brother asked to borrow my 45 1.5 ton flatbed to move some firewood. Gets in, turns the key, then yells out the window "The dam battery's dead in this thing!"

The great thing is; he's actualy done this TWICE!
