What can I do to get it to turn over sooner?
Thos is a 216 cu in 6 v floor starter set up I am using. These old engines are pretty cold-natured. If the fuel level in the carburetor is right and the ignition is well-tuned, it should start in the first 5 seconds or so of cranking with the choke pulled out all the way. If the engine won't crank for 30 seconds at normal cranking speed without a boost, you need a new battery, or the cable connections and grounds are bad.

Here is another thread about hard-starting. There are several additional factors to consider. I will use the choke and see how that plays in my situation. I have never driven a vehicle this old, or a 6v system either. Maybe that is why I have kept it like the factory made it. I has brand new ground straps and a new battery. Cant wait for tomorrow so I can try the choke.

That's why I like automatic chokes- - - - -they're smarter than all drivers, and most mechanics! With a properly-set automatic choke and fast idle system, just tap the throttle once to allow it to preset itself, and crank the engine without touching the gas pedal. It will start and set itself to the most effective warmup RPM without any input from the driver at all. Correct cold starting with a manual choke is definitely a learned skill.
