I know I have seen this before but I could not find it in the archives. I just got a brand new front panel for my 57 from a nice guy in North GA and I want to get a primer on it. I will be using Zerorust red oxide for the primer. Should I roughen up the panel as it is? With a orbital sander or will steel wool suffice?

Thanks

Ack! Don't use steel wool! It'll catch everywhere and rust!

Brand new panel - does it have the black primer on it? If so, scuff it well with a Red Scotch Pad, or 320 Grit, clean with Wax and Grease remover, then primer.

Lol yeah steel wool does sound like a dumb idea now. Yes it has that black primer. Thanks

most of the black /gray primers on reman panels are 'shipping primers'
and should be 100% removed, , I have seen adhesion problems with it being left on

I think I am going to go with the red/maroon scotchbrite pad and scuff the hell out of it. I will consider it a test for Zerorust's adhesiveidity. Yes I made that word up.

I agree with Elderspook on removing the black primer or at least sanding as much off as possible.

when we panel prep at the shop, the only time we use red scotchbright is right before we paint, it is the second to the last abrasive we use the fine , red , pads are equal to about 320 grit
the gray pads (ultra) are are the last and they are equal to about 400
the only time we use that on existing surfaces are on a fairly fresh paint.
