For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 13 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 13 | Hello,
I tested the radio on the bench and it turns out that it works. I found 2 power wires. Where do I plug the one in that just turns on the light? Do I connect it to the gauges or with the other power wire? Also is there anything I should do to the radio before installing it? Its still six volts and it looks to have all the original wiring in it. Thanks, Chris

In 1954, I think that the accessory clock's light-lead came with a "vampire" clamp to attached to the a convenient "rheostated" dash-light lead.

I might sound like the nerd that I am here when I say that its quite a thrill to here Perry Como start coming out of the radio. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | If you look at the chassis of the radio where all the components are mounted, you will see round cylinder shaped objects, usually yellow in color and covered in wax. These are the paper capacitors. There are also some other types but I can talk about them later. If you get a circuit of the radio, each of these capacitors is listed in the parts list, the circuit diagram shows where they are connected and usually there is a diagram of where they are on the chassis. These are usually replaced because they dry out and short. Quite a few members here have successfully done this work on thier truck radio. We have walked some of them through the process and helped when they are stuck.
I buy my capacitors from a place on the net called "just capacitors". The rest of my parts I usually get from Antique electronic Supply. If you want to give it a go, I would be glad to help you out, on the site here. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 13 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 13 | Thanks for the link! Ill see if I can locate some circuit diagrams. So these are the things to change out:wax condencers,buffer,electrolycs,filters and capacitors. Correct me if im wrong. Thanks again for your help. If so, here is an online version of the manual. Online 47 Radio Manual . If your radio has the straight vertical parting line, let me know and I will see if I have a scan of the manual. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 | Condenser=capacitor
buffer=specific capacitor
electrolytic=specific kind of capacitor
filter=capacitor (often electrolytic, in power supply)

The "buffer" capacitor resides under the metal cover, in the vicinity of the vibrator and 0Z4 tube. This particular capacitor has a voltage rating musch higher than the rest, usually around 1600 volts.All the yellow wax covered capacitors are rolled paper capacitors and they should all be treated as suspect. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | The reference I made to the online radio manual above is incorrect. That radio is the 1951 to 53 radio, model 986443. The circuit is different than the 1947 to 50 radio. My apologies. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 13 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 13 | Thanks guys for the info. Truckernix is kind enough to help me out with rebuilding the radio. Anyone have the scans for the 986067 radio. Im going to order the one from the parts dealers but would like to get started as soon as I can.
Thanks, Chris
