I have 1949 GMC Dlx. Want to keep it original looking. Thinking of converting over from 6v to 12v by updating coil, battery and internals on the generator. I have done this on my old tractors with good results i.e. Petronix ignition to replace points & condenser etc. As to tunes the truck stereo will be a portal unit "Jawbone" bluetooth device - will be loud enough for the truck.

Would like to rewire entire truck so looking for harnesses. I see Painless sells a 12v street rod and not much on the search results here. Looking for your feedback.

Thanks

I got my wiring harness from these guys, http://www.ynzyesterdaysparts.com/

Great to work with and will probably put together a harness that suits your needs, original looking too.

Did you search on painless - 355 results; 183 in the Electrical Bay?

Did you search on +wiring +harness - 1,000 results in the Electrical Bay?

Nonetheless, you'll most likely get a lot of responses right here.

shepfl, there are SEVERAL out there to get your harness from. I have used painless, twice, and considered others. You can get them with 12 circuits up to over 20.
I ended up going with Painless again on my panel. I got the 20 circuit one even though 12 would probably do me as I don't get into the gadgetry. Nevertheless, my nephew who volunteered to wire it seemed to favor the Painless, with the Mini Fuse panel, so I went with it. My other "personal" choice was Rebel which will give you a 15% discount if you see the tech tip here on the bolt and call after 5pm. (double check me on that)

Both line is I think they ALL are labeled every 5 or 6 inches and most would probably be fine. I did get the feeling that spending a lot of money would only give me braging rights but not necessarily the best value for my buck. So, as I always say, decide what you want, do the homework then put it in black and white and you'll have your answer.

Good luck. Let us know what YOU decide on and Why. I'm curious!!

I searched rewiring. Did not search for painless.

If you want an original looking harness I can also recommend YNZ. I bought the harness for my '38 from them. The cloth covered harnesses are expensive. Why convert to 12v? If you're just wanting to push a radio you can buy a step-up to power it unless you want a door thumper.

I've installed 4 Painless wiring harnesses of various configurations.
The most recent was the "truck specific" 18 circuit harness that accommodates
a GM sterring column. This was for my 51 panel.

I'm sure the other manufacturers are good, too, but, I've used Painless and have never had an issue; plus they are very helpful when you run into a problem.

my 2 cents

I rewired my Belair using the 12 ciecuit wiring from Painless. First time rewiring bumper to bumper. Worked out great. Took my time and planned ahead for the wiring routing. Painless also has great tech support. If and when I rewire my truck, I use Paimless again. Can not argue with success.

OK Fellas -
Thanks for the links and the other "search" terms. Will be doing some more research. Right now looks like 18 circuit harness just for expansion. I want to do this once and done. Very unlikely I will add any gizmos but does not hurt to plan ahead.

Back in the weeds . . .

No door thumper needed. Just trying for consistency. I have converted my Allis Chalmers G tractors to 12v as I did with my Farmall Cub. This way everything on "Hell's Half Acre" is consistent. My other tractors (Olivers) were already 12v.
