Before re-wiring it ran great. After re-wiring it still runs fine but starts to cough and sputter when I get to the tail end of each gear. In 3rd gear, it might go 40 mph while coughing and sputtering. It just doesn't respond when I try to accelerate. I thought it might be the timing and dwell since I replaced points and condensors. I took the truck to a mechanic and he set the timing and checked dwell. After a few minor adjustments, no really noticable difference...still coughs and sputters at the tail end of each gear. Any ideas? During the re-wiring I replaced the starter, coil, resistor. Your ideas would help tons. Thanks in advance!!

it could be one of many things but these are the easiest to check first
hope this is of some help

Check to see if the coil you installed has an internal resistor in addition to the one you replaced. If so, the primary ignition circuit current will be too low to develop a good spark. The voltage at the + terminal of the coil should be approximately 9.5 volts with the engine running and the charging system voltage at about 14.5 or so. An original-equipment type coil SHOULD NOT have a resistor internally in the primary circuit. Jerry

Star washers will help and the frame must be ground clean of paint, then you can cover back up with a little grease or petro jelly. HRL, I thought 12 volt coils came with internal ballast resistors, and 6 volt coils did not. So there are 12 volt coils without resistors? | | |
