Apparently this is so easy I can't do it. I bought a new spring for this and have now lost it for the second time. This time for good. How do you put these on so they will stay? Obviously I'm not getting them tight enough so it will stay. I'm afraid if I get it too tight it won't work. Which way do you put it on and which way do you 'wind' it to make it work? Thanks,Scott

Make sure that you have the old spring out of the slot. If its in far enough it will be parallel to the peg for the hook end of the spring. When installed it should hold light pressure on the plate to the closed position. It is easier if you get the spring put into the slot first, then use a needle nose pliers and put the hook onto the peg.

I think that two springs were used in combination as part of the heat-riser mechanism (the manifold heat control valve).

Part numbers (from the Master Parts Book):
3.640 Thermostat (exhaust manifold heat control valve)
3.653 Spring (manifold heat control valve)

I do not remember ever seeing both in place (but, my memory get worse every year).

After the spring is installed pinch the end of the shaft together with a pair of pliers.
