as i,m considering buying a truck with one in
what is the power like?
are they reliable?
are they tunable ?
any comments positive or other ??

| | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy spanners, the Pontiac/GMC V8s were/are very reliable, the engineers at GMC had their pick of GM engines for the light/medium duty truck line, and they chose to use the Pontiac engine over all the others. Are they tunable, of coarse they are, they just require a little more research than the small block Chevy, to tell you what interchanges, and what works well, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 | No experience with the 347, but I had a 1958 336 in my 1959 gmc when I got it. The 336 is basically the same engine as the 347. It was a very reliable trouble free motor. I have since replaced the 336 with a 1959 pontiac 389, which I have had bored and stroked to 447 inches. 1955-1959 pontiacs are vitually interchangeable as far as dimensions and mounts go. A 1960 pontiac will also bolt up to the hydramatic transmission. The timing cover is different on the 1960 Pontiac as the 1960 motor is not "reverse cooled like the 1955-1959 pontiac and gmc v8 motors. I saw them give 150,000 trouble free miles of service when the proper oil change and tune-up intervals were observed. There is a '57 Pontiac Chieftan two door post here that has the factory Tri-Power setup and it still is a very dependable and fast engine. The only changes I'm aware of is the change out to a HEI and some carburetor modifications. The 287, 316, 347, 370, 389, 400 and 421 were all excellent engines in my opinion.
