I have been told that a 2-ton truck I am wanting to get is a second series. How can I tell?

If you look in Gerald Krahn's first series blue 2 ton dump truck, it looks exactly like the one I hope to get, but so does Matt Droege's 2nd series 1955 Chevy 6500. They have the same mirrors, cab, glass, and front end look and shape. But on Clayton Truman's second series Chevy tanker truck, it has the grille that looks like a grid. I also noticed some of the 2nd series have the fender lights on them. How can I tell them apart?

sometimes the gallery listings get misplaced, the 55 1st series trucks are the Advance-Design 47-54 style, the 55 2nd series are the Task Force 56-59 style, the grills on the different sizes [light/medium vs heavy] are different most years, and the GMC's are different than Chev's .... the 55 2nd to 57 are nearly identical, the 58 and 59 are nearly identical, the main differences are in the hood and fender emblems

I noticed the hood emblems on some of these heavy chevys are long and skinny, while others short and plump. Which is which?

Your truck is a '55 2nd series. The difference in the hood emblems is this, the '55 model trucks have the shorter, plump hood emblem, while the '56, & '57 models have the longer, skinny emblems.

1955 Chevy 6400,

You have a 1955 Second Series 6400, it looks all original with the correct Hood (same Hood is used on 1956), Hood Embelem and Fender Embelems. Go to the Gallery and look at other 55's and the 56/57's to see the difference.

As Spanky said, the 56 and 57 Hood Embelems are the same except they are painter in reverse to each other. The 56 has a Red bowtie and Black surround while 57 has a Black Bowtie with Red surround.

Hey, 1955 6400! My 2nd-series '55 has the short, fat hood-emblem, which,as Mike B mentioned, are the same, except for the opposing paint schemes. Starting in '55,Chevy owners had the choice of two different engine configurations:straight-six-(the short-style hood emblem),or the "long-skinny".style emblem.signifying a V-8-powered vehicle. I hope this helps. Sincerely: [email protected]

wetwilly5757,

The hood embelems were ALL the same for Second Series 1955 trucks regardless of the engine installed, there was no differenct between 6 and 8 cylinder equiped embelems. The picture of 1955_Chevy_6400's truck shows the correct emblem that was used on ALL 1955 Second Series trucks.

The long skinny emblems used on the 56/57 trucks were made with and without a "V", which identified the truck as having a V8 engine.
