It rained today. I'm having problems with the windshield wipers. When I turn on the vacuum windshield wiper, they go in one direction. When I turn them off, they return to the original position. Any ideas to resolve the problem? thanks, Larry | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 575 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 575 | Larry,
That was one of the first problems I fixed with my wipers as well.
I started with a wiper motor rebuild. It comes apart quite easily and you basically clean up the flapper area and lubricate things. There was a post on this site where someone had shown step by step how to open up, clean, and reseal. I was unable to find it in a quick search.
But after I did that my wipers worked great!

I had been fiddling with the vacuum wipers for a while and that was the last straw. I even was using a NOS wiper motor. I finally capitulated and installed a problem free 12 v wiper. Someday I will give it another shot.

1954 truck?
Original 6v, or 12v?
Do you have an original 1954 truck radio?

There is a valve on the side that switches the routing of the vacuum when the wipers have moved across the window. If this is not working the wipers will stop there. When you turn them off there is a separate operation to park them. | | | | Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 188 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 188 | I had trouble with valve operation on my '54. I had removed it for cleaning and when I put it back in it would not park. Problem was that the flexible shaft coming from the knob can move where it attaches to the motor frame. A little adjustment there got it working again. | | |
