I've asked about this problem before but found no resolution. Maybe I can be more clear about it. My 350 with an Edelbrock Performer has been great from the start. Recently, I began having very bad surging (not all the time) when I try accelerating from 35mph (or more) up to highway speed. Not all the time, but occasionally, and then after maybe a minute or so it just goes away. I've installed a new fuel pump, new rubber fuel hoses and vacum hoses. The thing is, I can't recreate the problem. It happens when it feels like it.

what transmission does it have and what gear are you in when the problem occurs?

It has a 700R4 and it happens in third or fourth gear. I think it happens mostly in third gear.

No. Like it's running out of gas. My wife was following me just yesterday and she could hear it from her truck. I never know when it's going to happen and I can't make it happen. We went from Chattanooga to Nashville Saturday and it happened twice in the whole 200-plus mile roundtrip. (But we did take 3rd place in the modified class at an AACA sanctioned event.)

does it ever die, and then pick up on its own

the reason I ask is that my 52 truck with the 235 had a mallory elect dist with no points, I wont go into the whole deal but mine acted really weird at times,it would stop running at high way speeds and then stop, would pick back up....it would always start like it suppose to, always idle like it was suppose to , etc.. after a long time I found out it was the electronic module, replaced it and never had any more problems,

sometimes an electronic problem can really be weird..

Mine is a 350 with a Mallory HEI that is less then two years old. My truck doesn't stop running. Doesn't buck. Doesn't hesitate from a stop. And it is entirely unpredictable. Frustrating for sure.

wish you were close, you could borrow my carb off my 52 and check the carb out that way, I always felt the carb was the last place to look but..............

mine is a 600 holley with the brock performer
no problem with mine but then I also run a four speed,

might want to check all vaccum hoses and such, I think they can
cause a problem with those carbs too...........

Running lean can cause strange things to happen, double check all the intake and carb hold down bolts, they might getting loose as the motor warms up. Unplug all vacuum hose not needed for a test drive incase one is leaking under the dash or where you cannot hear it. If it still acts funny, replace the fuel cap with a shop towel to make sure its not pulling a vacuum in the tank.
I would also add a clear fuel filter in front of the carb just for testing. If you can pull over, do so as soon as it shutters and check the filter for fuel. If its full, you know the problem is in the carb if its fuel related.
I just fought a rough running problem on a Plymouth, turned out to be a bad coil. The hotter it got, the worse it ran! HEI's are pretty steady and seem to work till they die, theres never a middle, either working or dead! Swap out the modual if you have one around, a old GM unit is better then a cheap priced new one! Pick up a spare or two next time your at a salvage yard, they are all the same. Another test is to bypass the whole ignition circuit with a jumper wire from battery to HEI. I have seen old key switches act up due to poor connections.
The firewall wire junction block is another place to look, the ignition wire might be partially burnt or rotted and bumps in the road might be triggering your problem.

Thanks Joe. I'll check that out. The problem is it can happen when the engine is warm or hot. I just never know. Bit I'll be checking out all suggestions since it might even be a combination of things.

If you are only going 35mph and trying to give it gas in high gear, if it isn't shifting down you may have to readjust the TV cable.
Or check the fuel filter(s). If it is brand new...check it anyway.
