Ok so after 5 years I've forgotten 3 things and I need someone to slap me so I can remember. On my '50 3100:

When I turn the key switch to "Start" is start position straight up & down or is it at the 10:00 position? If "Start" position is straight up & down and that's wrong what did I wire wrong?

I've got a '56 235. There's a tube on the intake manifold just below the carb that connected to a rubber vacuum line. The line goes thru the firewall into the cab. What does it connect to?

Finally, what does the throttle cable connect to?

If it's the original ignition switch used with the foot starter, there's only 2 position, Run and Off. Run will be roughly 12:00-2:00, depending on how the switch is clocked.
The line from the intake to the firewall is for the wipers. It's only used if you still have the factory vacuum wipers.
The throttle cable will hook up to the bracket on the carb that also holds the end of the choke. It will be the verticle clamp. The end of the wire will go through a hole in the throttle rod.

The switch just turns the power on and off. Yes straight up-down should be on and all the way yo the left should be off. It seems you just have the power in on the wrong post.

The vacuum line into the cab goes to the wiper motor.

And the throttle. sorry that sounds like a smart alek answer but it does. There should be a connection on the carbureator that operates independently from the floor pedal but does pretty much the same thing as the floor pedal.

I converted to electric wiper motor so I assume just plug the tube on the manifold.

This is a '56 235 engine. Carb linkage is slightly different than on the '50 216. Is the throttle cable really needed? I plan on installing for looks. What was the cable used for on these trucks?

The throttle was used if you ran the transmission activated PTO.

a pipe plug will work for your manifold


Key off position, Batt post should read voltage.. your other two post should read no voltage.
is it original ingnition?

The post by hippy in the thread linked-to by DADS50 is the purpose for the throttle described by GM/Chevrolet. Most of us have used the throttle for many other purposes.

When you have a carburetor with an automatic choke, there is often an "automatic" fast idle setting. So, trucks equipped with an automatic transmissions did not have a throttle control (or a choke control).

This is the original ignition switch. When the key is straight up & down I get power to gauges and to the starter.

Some of the ignition switches were able to be used without a key, with a small handle that hung down below the keyhole. Turning the switch to the right allowed the truck to be turned off and the key removed, and then all it took was a movement to the center position with the handle to restart. If the key was turned to the left and removed from the switch, the key was needed to turn the tumbler again. Turn left for engine off and lock, right for engine off and restart without needing a key. I rode a school bus for many years that was set up that way.
