I"ve just recently ordered a chrome side cover and gasket from Ecklers and the gasket seems awfully thin to me. It is a Victor Reinz cork but very thin.

Should I try and find a thicker gasket or is this one probably sufficient?

They are pretty thin. With your new cover it should work fine. I Glue it too the cover & let it dry good so it wont shift while you are putting it in. Then put a light coat of RTV along the lower edge & tighten it up evenly.

One more question I used Permatex High Tack on the Valve Cover gasket but left it dry on the head side. Is it OK to use High Tack to get it stuck to the side pan and then switch to RTV? BTW do you like the blue or red RTV better?

Im not sure exactly what you mean but it sounds good. With that new cover you should not have a problem. The red RTV is for higher temps. But I use a lot of the black on detailed stuff as it looks better if it oozes out.

If your chrome covers have the gasket flange chromed, as most do, take a small grinder and remove some of the chrome so the sealer has something to hold on to. Mine were so smooth and slick, they leaked all the time, I gave up and went back to stock covers.

Good point, I'll ruff the inside lip where the gasket goes up some before sticking the gasket on. Getting kinda excited at this point cause after I reinstall the side cover, plug wires, coil and carb, I can find out if my rebuild job on the Rochester was correct. Then it's back in the garage until after the Wiffy's hip replacement surgery next week.
