old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 | I ran into trouble yesterday, got my panel turned around with engine facing garage door. I am now ready to lift cab off frane. One last thing to remove is steering column, pulled steering wheel off and figured all I have to do is remove 4 bolts off of steering box and pull steering column out. I can't seperate the gears they seem to screw apart but something is locking it in at the end of worm gear? Does anyone know the answer to tis please!! | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 | OK, figured it out. I took the end tension nut out and seen what's holding shaft in. It has a bearing with a flanged washer holding it on. Don't want to mess with that. Sooo I will remove the whole steering box along with shaft as one assembly. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 | To remove the whole assembly. First of all hold wheels in straight line, mark arm lever on housing at angle. There are 4 bolts and one driver side steering linkage. pull cotter pin out of linkage attached to steering box arm. use largest flat head screw driver availble and unscrew linkage knuckle from ball. Kinda like a hip joint, once loose enough it will pop off. 3/4 inch six sided wrenches and sockets are you best choice. remove two from side of frame using inside of frame as wrench holder. Renove top bolt using side of frame as holder of wrench. last bolt is underneath front of steering box I used 6 sided wrench and prybar to break loose then ratchet. After that pull whole assembly out and whalla. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 | I searched in tech talk and engine talk. Could not find the subject on steering column removal. So if anyone has more info please add and add to the proper site location. I probably got too specific on my search. This stovebolt sight is wonderful it has been very helpful to me so far. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 | You're welcome. Did you notice I just used what you had posted in your subject line? The key is to use the SEARCH In the upper tool bar only, not in the middle bar next to FAQ. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 Moderator | | Moderator Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 | I went by the truck manual. I took the steering box and the column out as one unit. You need to remove the 3 bolts holding the inner fender to the firewall, also the left fender to cowl brace and the driver's seat. The column comes out over the top of the grill, not out from underneath. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 46 | yes I noticed, and yes I used the search on left of screen not the top one. I will use the top one from now on thank you for all your help! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 2,557 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 2,557 | The steering gear box will come out the bottom as well,at least on my suburban it did.
