I just took my 54 out on it's first trip around the block sinse getting it. It has a 4speed tranny. Reverse works fine, It moves through all the gears just fine. After taking off in 2nd gear, it does just fine, but when i go to third it falls on its face and wants to die, acting as if the engine speed is not high enough, but that is not the problem. Is it some kind of transmission problem or does it have to do with the carb. or some other engine problem?

It's possible the torque of the engine just isn't up to the load you're putting on it, but if that's the case, there's something seriously wrong that's limiting the engine's power. It should accelerate in third gear smoothly from about 15-20 MPH or more. Jerry

With my SM420, I used 3rd a lot for city driving. I wore out one third gear and now a second is starting to sing. I suspect the shaft and bearings are worn. All the other gears worked fine and were generally quiet.

But all is quiet. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | I think the fuel pump may need replacing, it's putting out fuel but just at a trickle. sounds like you have the solution, I suspect when it bogs down if you shut it off and check the carb you'd find the bowl near empty Bill | | | | | Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 150 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 150 | Thanks guys, ill let you know if that fixes it. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 150 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 150 | The fuel pump seams to have been the culprit. Thanks for all the help guys. | | |
