The shifter mechanism in the column is worn causing it to lock out the shifter in the cab,

My first thought would be a three speed top loader with worn out forks that finally bit the dust. Did the truck work fine before then 'something happened' and it's stuck. Does this transmission have the reverse lockout lever. Would it be possible that this lever could be part of the problem.
