I had changed the gasket on the side of the tranny several years ago when I started this restoration. This morning I found it leaks around that gasket. I thought these were supposed to be installed dry and with no permatex. Guess that's not the case. Assuming the gasket doesn't tear when I take the side plate off, can it be reused once it is saturated in oil if I permatex it, or will it require a new one? | | |

Check your cover plate to make sure it is flat ans use star washers on the bolts. No sealeant should be required. | | |

The gasket they sent me wasn't cork. It was more like cardboard. I'll check it out again. Thanks. | | |

I took the cover off where the leak was happening and it was immediately obvious that I had never changed the gasket. So I made a new gasket, used a little Permatex 2A and put it back on. Will let it set over night and then put gear fluid in tomorrow night. It will probably fix the problem. Harbor Freight has those hole punch sets and say what you will about HF, these punches are fine. Third time I've used them. The whole set was no more than $5 and they work great for cutting out gasket bolt holes. | | |
