So what do I call my rear end, besides big old rear end!!
I was at the engine builders to day checking up on the progress of my latest 216 head acquisition. The subject of rear end ratios came up in regards to keeping the babbit pounder running a little longer and I told him that the 4.56 was about the only choice I had for a 1950, 3604. Him being the Off-the-Road, 4x4 wheeler, truck pullin’ type, asked me what model rear end the truck had in it. Standing there dumb founded all I could come up with was, oh, it’s a GM! Upon which, he turned and went back into the office and shut the door in the certified dummies face.
So what make and model is the stock rear end in a 1950, 3604 trucks other than a GM?

Denny,
I believe that would be an Eaton HO52.
I have one in mine too...

Denny,
I think that they call the 1 Tons HO72 and as stated yours would be a HO52. The ratio should be 4.57. I guess that you know that you can install a later pumpkin of the 4.10 variety?

An Eaton HO72, OK, thanks, now I'll be able to dazzle him tomorrow. Any idea where I can find that info in print?
Yep, you are correct o' mundo Fred, 4.57, I'm just in the habit of saying 4.56, 4.11 etc., some left overs from the days when I played with the cars and hung around the drag strips.
I have been asking round junk yards for many a month now and that 4.10 would be a very rare bird. I'd like to find, even a junker so I could do some comparisons up on the surface plate. I've been wondering for a while if there are any ring and pinions out there, that could with some machine work be adapted to fit the 3/4 ton ADs carrier. I wish I had a collection of a few 3/4 ton junkers to experiment with.
Tks again guys.

the torque tube rearend in my 52panel is coming out soon. Does it have an Eaton HO2 in it? I think(?)mine has a 4:11?? It'll be up for grabs soon, very soon smile

edit: I'm putting the 56 pumpkin in mine which is a 3:90....so I'm told? Its still in the shipping container so I have not checked it. Denny, do you need a 52???

Denny,
I got my 4.10 from a wreckers that was about to call in the crusher. The guy looked for a week and found one. Believe it or not, it was in a 1/2 Ton that someone had switched rearends on. I believe it is from a 71.

When I changed mine to 4.10 (from 5.14) I had to change the carrier as well, and shorten the drive shaft slightly. But I love the new gear; it is exactly what I wanted. The carrier I have is '72 and earlier 3/4 and 1-ton.
